Jameis Winston appears to be working himself back into the good graces of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, as evidenced by his return to a starring role in team-related promotional materials.
Winston was essentially relegated to persona non grata status as he served his three-game suspension to start the season due to a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The franchise quarterback was conspicuously omitted from player murals at Raymond James Stadium ahead of the season.
However, all that has changed with his return to starting quarterback status. Ahead of Sunday’s Week 6 divisional showdown with the Atlanta Falcons, Winston takes center stage in a promo video.
The video shows Winston entering the darkened Bucs’ indoor practice facility. With the lights turned on, Winston is shown getting himself ready for work.
“Here’s what I know,” Winston says in the video, via the Tampa Bay Times. “I know about the grind, about laying out the groundwork. I know about one more rep, one more rep, one MORE rep. And one more after that.”
Then, after a brief cutaway to a video of him pumping his fist in celebration during a 2017 win over the Bears, Winston delivers the money line.
“I know where this team is going,” he says, taking a ball from a bag and dropping back to pass. “So, you raise the flags, and we’ll fire the cannons.”
Winston’s role as the Bucs’ once-and-future franchise quarterback seemingly was in some jeopardy as Ryan Fitzpatrick set the NFL on fire in the first few games of the season. FitzMagic, however, fizzled quickly, as Winston replaced Fitzpatrick in a Week 4 blowout loss to the Chicago Bears. Winston was restored as the team’s permanent starter going forward, and Fitzpatrick returned to the bench.
Now, every indication points to the notion that order has been restored, and the Bucs are Winston’s team once again.
