Report: 49ers assistant Rich Scangarello to interview for Broncos OC job

Not long after the shocking news broke that the Denver Broncos would not have Gary Kubiak as the offensive coordinator next season, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that San Francisco 49ers quarterback coach Rich Scangarello is going to interview for the vacant position.

This news is interesting on two fronts.

First, it’s a clear signal that the Broncos are looking to get younger and more innovative in terms of offensive philosophy. Scangarello engineered the top-scoring SCAC offense two years in a row during his stint at Millsap College in Mississippi.

Secondly, it’s interesting because the 49ers have recently blocked run-game coordinator Mike McDaniels from interviewing for offensive coordinator jobs.

Originally a Tom Cable assistant at Idaho and then with the Oakland Raiders, Scangarello coached under Kyle Shanahan in 2015, then again in 2017-18.
