Report: Redskins’ Smith battling infection related to leg surgery

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is battling an infection related to the surgery he underwent on the broken fibula and tibia in his right leg, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

It's unclear how the infection may affect his recovery. Smith suffered the injuries Nov. 18 against the Houston Texans. A report one week later suggested Smith wasn't a lock to return to football, though it also stated the Redskins were optimistic he'd make a full recovery.

Smith is under contract with Washington through the 2022 campaign. The 34-year-old threw for 2,180 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in 10 games this year.

The Redskins are 0-2 without Smith, and lost to the Texans in the game he exited.
